How to Fix Error - Any performance benefits upgrading XP SP3 -> Win7 for Laptop (DELL INSPIRON 1520)??

Any performance benefits upgrading XP SP3 -> Win7 for Laptop (DELL INSPIRON 1520)?

According to the "Upgrade Advisor" the laptop should be fully compatible (even though not officially by DELL support).
In the past I downgrade from Vista due to performance issues and I'm currently running a pretty clean 32bit WinXP pro installation in a "performance mode".

I would like to (potentially) reduce the Boot times as well as enjoy other performance benefits  - perhaps utilizing additional flash module or maybe install more RAM (currently 2Gb but consider upgrading to 4Gb).

Considering the HW and usage profile below – shall I expect any performance benefits or would upgrading to Win7 just make everything even slower and heavier?
Would increasing RAM (2GB->4GB) or adding an add-on flash memory (for ReadyBoost) significantly improve boot times and overall performance (for Win7 as well as XP )?
Hardware configuration:
INSPIRON 1520
CPU: Core2Duo T7300 2.00GHZ
RAM: 2X 1Gb 667MHz DDR2
HD: 160Gb SATA2 (5,400rpm)
Graphics: nVidia Geforce 8600M GT w/256Mb
Usage:Business applications (Office 2007, email and presentations), image manipulations and graphic design (Adobe CS4 Design) and  scientific image analysis (using Matlab and Image-Pro) .

Most of the application I use seem to be Win7 compatible (from the compatibility center) – but I want the option to use  "WinXp compatibility mode" if needed.

CPU usage, RAM/HD access efficiency and network file transfers are the most important factors for me.

**************** UPDATE *********

I installed in DualBoot and it went pretty smooth  -quicker than anticipated.
The boot times of Win7 were almost the same as the XP and Shut down was even quicker.
The new OS seems very responsive - much better than my previous experience with VISTA and almost as well as with XP (considering it's a clean install).
Unfortunatlly - some of my applications are not compatible yet - so good thing I kept my XP partition in place.

Now - Can anyone tip me regarding how to UnInstall the Win7 from the system?
I can just remove the extra partition of course - but as far as I understand - the XP won't be able to boot due too the updated MBR in the Primary partition - right?
So - is there a "clean" way to remove the Win7 Installation?
I do have the original XP Pro SP3 DVD as well as a bootable "rescue" disk I created just before setting up the Win7.

1.
Typically, you would need to install over Windows XP - however, there are tools on the market that will allow you to create an image of your current Windows XP installation -- such as Acronis TrueImage.

2.
The only thing you would need to have for a proper dual-boot installation is a seperate partition or two seperate hard drives.

3.
Performance would be the same as if it were the only OS installed as it would be running natively on the hardware itself.

4.
Honestly, I'd recommend moving to Windows 7 and then just using Windows XP Mode when you run into an application that needs to be run under it - you'd have a smoother experience overall.

Have a great weekend!
