Could Not Reconnect Network Drives, Yet They Are Fine + File Permissions Issue
Ok, so I've got two problems that hopefully someone could help me with, and I guess they could be related.
When I first log-on to my W7 laptop, I often (but not always) get a balloon telling me that Windows could not reconnect all network drives, yet when I go into explorer the drives are there with the blue bar already showing how full they are, but with a red
cross. Opening them up in turn removes the red cross and all is working fine. Just rather annoying, really. If I were to open Outlook first, I'd get told that the path for my pst file is invalid, being as it is on one of the drives, and then it would open
a 'File Open' window for the drive with it reconnected.
The second issue is that one of the network drives refuses to allow me permission to delete files, saying that I need permission from Administrators first. That would be fine, if it wasn't for the fact that my account is domain admin! If I specifically go
and take ownership of the object it gets stranger...
telling me that I need permission from
For the record, I'm on a Dell Latitude E6500 with W7, connecting to a 2K3 server domain, and connecting on a gigabit card to a gigabit switch. When I previously connected to a small 10/100 switch under my desk, which in turn connected to the gigabit switch,
I didn't have problems with connections (although I never tried deleting items on the awkward share, because I rarely have need to). It's almost as if being on faster connection is causing me the issue with the reconnect problem. For the shares, is it worth
noting that the share that works perfectly is the PDC, and the awkward share is on the secondary?
Any ideas?

There is no reason whatsoever not to use logon scripts under Windows 7.
You could, in fact, use it in order to assist your trouble-shooting effort and, if necessary, to delay the process of mapping your shares.
I would do it in stages like so:
1.
Place the script below into the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs on the workstation.
It will run each time someone logs on and gets validated either locally or by the domain.
2.
Remove the above script, then place it into the logon share of your domain controller.
It will run each time someone gets validated by the domain, provided that you specify the script name in the user's domain profile.
@echo off
echo %date% %time% %UserName% %ComputerName% %UserDomain% >> "%UserProfile%\desktop\logon.txt"
net use Q: \\ServerName\ShareName 1>>"%UserProfile%\desktop\logon.txt" 2>>&1
net use >>"%UserProfile%\desktop\logon.txt"
How to Avoid Downloading Malware
Where are you getting the download?
There are malicious people who download valid copies of a popular download, modify the file with malicious software, and then upload the file with the same name. Make sure you are downloading from the developer's web page or a reputable company.
Cancel or deny any automatic download
Some sites may automatically try start a download or give the appearance that something needs to be installed or updated before the site or video can be seen. Never accept or install anything from any site unless you know what is downloading.
Avoid advertisements on download pages
To help make money and pay for the bandwidth costs of supplying free the software, the final download page may have ads. Watch out for anything that looks like advertisements on the download page. Many advertisers try to trick viewers into clicking an ad with phrases like "Download Now", "Start Download", or "Continue" and that ad may open a separate download.
