Troubleshooting:Custom format for assigning decimal to imported text

Custom format for assigning decimal to imported text

I have brought over data from a IBM Query 36 application and imported into Excel as txt.  The numbers imported without decimals, and are designed to be one decimal, e.g.
79.8 is displayed in Excel as 798.  Is there custom formatting I can assign to the
applicable cells to display the numbers as they should appear(79.8 rather than 798).  Excel tells me the applicable data has been assigned a "General" format.  If I change the format to "Number", the decimal is assigned to the incorrect location, such as 798.0.
The data in these columns will be constantly updated, so it would be more convenient to have a custom format rather than to convert the number with a formula.  Thanks for any help!

You could apply the custom number format #0"."0;-#0"."0;0
Select the cells containing the numbers, click the little arrow to the right of NUmber on the home tab > Number > Custom > Type:  #0"."0;-#0"."0;0
However, if you ever wanted to do some processing on these numbers it would be confusing that the value in the cell is actually 10 times what it appears, so if you wanted to test if a value was greater than 100 you would have to write it as =IF(A1>1000,...)
I would instead divide all the values by 10 after import.
Quite easy to do:
- enter 10 in a cell
- copy the cell
- select the imported numbers
- paste (the drop arrow at the bottom of the button) > Paste Special > Values , Divide
You could have this done by a macro after the import if desired.

To check for Windows updates. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update. Install the latest updates for Windows and for the program displaying the error. Note that the update for the program might be listed as an optional update on the Windows Update page.

Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.
