How to Fix Error - Date functions error even using examples.?

Date functions error even using examples.

A colleague is experiencing a strange problem with Excel 2007.
When they enter any formula or function that uses a date, they get a "too few arguments" error.
The one we've used is the TEXT function that returns the day of a date.
So A2 contains a date 25/01/2011.
Then in A3 we add =TEXT(A2,"ddd"), but on hitting return the error appears sayign the function is invalid.
This appears to happen with any date related function even if we use the dialog box to construct the formula.
However, it only happpens for formulas entered by the user.
If a workbook is opened that already has a function in it that function works (but cannot
be recreated by the user in the same book).
Any ideas what could be causing this?
